It is a post-harvest festival, which denotes the celebration of the spirit of togetherness, unity, with great zeal and enthusiasm every year. This year in 2017, it will be observed on the 14th of November, which happens to be a Tuesday.
On the day of the festival, the people from the Sumi tribe dress up completely in their traditional attires and the depiction is nothing less than a folk festival where people also indulge in traditional folk music and dancing.
One of the major highlights of the Ahuna Festival in Nagaland is the grand procession of an animal called ‘’Mithun’’ which according to their culture, marks the economic as well as social prosperity among the whole Sumi Tribe.

The tribe also offers a demonstration to the bystanders on how to cook the freshly harvested rice in bamboo.
Another important objective of this festival as per the natives of Nagaland is to make the younger generation more aware of the tribes’ ancient history, culture, and to celebrate unity within diversity, since there are around 40 tribes in total in the north-eastern state of Nagaland in India, some of which are big tribes while the others are remotely small ones.
Through the Ahuna Festival, the people from the Sumi Community vouch for preserving their culture as well as traditions.
Other than the Ahuna Festival, which is a major highlight of the Sumi Tribe in Nagaland, some of the other popular festive observances of the other tribes in the state include, Sekrenyi, Tsungrem Mong, as well as Moatsu.
